Myths Your Mother Told You About Stunting Your Growth, Or Are They?
It seems as if mothers use everything they don’t want you to do as a threat to stunt your growth, or cross your eyes. The question begs, “Is there any truth to the notion that certain things you do can stunt your growth, or is your growth determined by your genetics”. The answer is that it is a combination of the two. Although there is nothing that you can do that will literally stop you from growing, there are things that a person can do that will slow down the process of growth, leading you not to grow to your overall height potential.
Each person is born with a predisposition for height. Mostly, it is based on how genetics combined from your Mom and your Dad. Predetermined, you will not waver too much from what you are destined to be, so take heart. On the other hand, If you want to reach the maximum of your height potential, you want to make sure to take certain steps.
There are certain times in your life when you will experience growth spurts. There are literally times when you will go to bed and wake up taller. Some mothers will swear they are going crazy thinking that it seems as if you grew overnight. The fact is, you did. People grow when they sleep. It would stand to reason, therefore, if you do not get the sleep that you require, your body will not have the energy that it needs to grow. It is important to get the proper amount of sleep at night, whether you are two, or 22. The teenage years, right before puberty, and during, is the most crucial growth period. Making sure to get enough sleep during then is very important.
It may not be as obvious as the way it is portrayed in the Popeye cartoons, but eating does have a relation to how you grow, and the overall health of your body. During parts of your life when you experience growth spurts, it is very important to get the calories that your body needs to grow effectively. You can see the effects of poor nutrition exaggerated in third world nations. If your body does not have enough energy, or the right kind of nutrition, it will not have the resources to grow the way that it wishes. It will be wasting calories on day to day activities, instead of using those much needed resources to grow tall.
Finally, it is important to get exercise. Sitting on a couch all day will, in fact, have consequences on your stature. If you do nothing to get your heart pumping and the blood flowing, your body will not receive enough oxygen to grow to the maximum potential. So, although it is not true that talking back to your mother will stunt your growth, not eating your vegetables, or staying up instead of sleeping as a teenager, may actually stunt your growth. You may not be stunted a foot, but potentially inches, and for many, that means a lot.
